Business Essentials #12: Review, Celebrate, Plan, Do

We are in our final month of our Business Essentials series beautiful kin! I can’t believe November is here. That means it’s only 50 days until Christmas. Which also means it’s time to stop for a moment and spend a little time working on your business instead of in it. Before things get even more hectic in retail land, let’s review, celebrate, prioritise and plan so you can keep doing what you love.

1. Review

2015 Business Review

Whether you achieved everything you wanted to and more or you found yourself on a different path, reflecting and reviewing is such an essential part of being able to set goals and plan for your business. Grab a pen and a piece of paper right now and finish these sentences…

  • Three things my business achieved this year…
  • The biggest challenge this year has been…
  • How I’ve worked through this challenge…
  • Looking back on this year, I feel…

 

2. Celebrate

You might not always realise it but there’s always something to celebrate. My favourite way to do just that is to consciously give thanks for the wonderful things in life (and to do it with a cup of chai and a little raw chocolate). By being grateful and celebrating your successes, you’re making a choice to focus on the good and the happy which, when running a business, is an incredibly important and mindful skill that anyone can master by practising gratitude.

Grab that paper and pen again (and some raw chocolate if you’ve got some handy) and answer this lovelies:

  • What wonderful things did 2015 bring about?
  • What are you grateful for?
  • What are you looking forward to?

 

3. Prioritise

This is one of my favourite tasks to complete for my business and to help others complete when I’m coaching businesses too. It’s the act of getting your top three priorities clear. Why does this matter? Because we know how busy and crazy life can get. By getting clear on your top three priorities, you always have something to come back to and you know what you’re working towards, no matter where the journey takes you. That means you’re able to be more productive, you’re able to focus your efforts and you’re able to finish that year and celebrate big time, feeling grateful for making time for those three important things.

Spend a moment now thinking about the three biggest goals, actions or projects, that will have the biggest and most positive impact on your business in the next three months. These might contribute to a longer term goal, or they might be individual goals worth pursuing in their own right. They don’t have to be big goals, but they do need to have a big reward or impact for your business.

Get that pen ready.

When you’ve got one ready to go, write it down, then work through the details:

    • What’s the priority?
    • What are the next steps you need to take to work towards it (and the dates you’ll have these completed by)?
    • Do you need anyone to help you?
    • What obstacles might get in your way?
    • How are you going to overcome them and keep working towards it?

 

Spend time getting clear on those details for all three priorities, then once you’re ready, use the printable three month calendar below to schedule time to work on those priorities over the next three months.

4. Plan

As I mentioned, the free printable content calendar below includes space for you to plan out your work for the next three months. Add in important dates, holidays, shipping deadlines and any other details, as well as personal holidays or events, and, of course, make sure you include marked time to work on your top three priorities. Refer to this calendar daily and let it help you create the space to do the things you love, because that’s why we’re here, right?

I hope this little strategic planning session has helped you get clear on the next steps for your business, and I hope it’s inspired a little gratitude for the year nearly gone. Don’t forget to look after yourself – a little mindful breathing, yoga class here and there, and a good green smoothie can work wonders, especially over the busy holiday season.
