We’re officially halfway through 2015. If you’re feeling anything like me, which is slightly in awe at the speed at which this year is zooming past, this month’s post if for you. July means the start of a new financial year, which coincidentally means the perfect time to reflect, plan and prioritise for the next six months. Let’s do this.
CHECK IN WITH YOUR GOALS
First things first, let’s take a moment to check in with the reflection and goal setting you did at the end of last year and beginning of this year. In the first post of this series, I created a downloadable sheet that asked you to write down your top three goals for 2015. What were those goals? Have you made progress towards achieving them?
It’s totally normal if your goals have evolved or changed entirely. If they have, take time now to write down what those new goals are, and if you’ve achieved the goals you set for yourself at the beginning of the year, what’s next? We’re always moving onto the next thing so always keep setting new goals to work towards.
KEEP, STOP, START
On that downloadable sheet were three questions that I’d like to take five minutes now to revisit.
What things do you want to keep doing?
What things do you want to stop doing?
What things do you want to start doing?
Have you done more of what you set out to do? Did you let go of bad habits or things that were holding you back? Did you keep doing those things that you think you do well? Answer these questions again right now and identify the next things you’d like to stop doing, start doing and keep doing for the next six months.
SET YOUR PRIORITIES
The second half of the calendar year, or first half of the financial year, is a big one for retail businesses because it includes Christmas. For nearly all retailers, Christmas is the biggest campaign and selling period of the year. So, now’s the perfect time to set your priorities straight and focus your efforts to make the most of this busy time of year.
What are your priorities in the lead up to Christmas?
Are you looking to put together a Christmas catalogue? Will you be designing and printing special Christmas packaging and collateral for your bricks and mortar and online stores? Are you investing in advertising that you haven’t previously tried before? Are you planning some wonderful events or promotions?
Think about everything that’s on your To Do list (and the things you want to be on your To Do list) and consider what the top three priorities are. What three things will help you achieve your best Christmas yet?
THE NEXT BIG THREE
Earlier this year you also set a business action plan – that let you set three big rocks to focus on and put together marketing/digital activity projections. Revisit your action plan and fill in the column for the 6 month mark, then take a look at those big 3 rocks.
You’ve reflected on the goals you set at the beginning of the year, you’ve identified what you want to keep doing, stop doing and start doing, you’ve spent some time thinking about what to prioritise for Christmas and beyond – the next step is to set your next big three rocks for the next 3-6 months. Give yourself at least half an hour to delve into these. These should be three big goals that will get your business closer to where you want it to be. It’s likely they’ll relate to your Christmas priorities but they don’t have to. What three things would make the biggest impact on your business in the next 3-6 months?
What are your top three goals for the next 3-6 months?
Feel free to answer these questions in a notebook with a cup of tea and a treat by your side (I always recommend having treats on hand for the best results). You can also download your 6 Month Reflection and Goal Setting Sheet here and answer the questions together
