“The inspiration for the upcoming ranges was quite eclectic – think Jaipur meets Cuba meets Palm Springs … with a dash of 70s!”
Driven by perpetual wanderlust, Melbourne-based wholesaler Canvas+Sasson has certainly carved itself a distinct identity – synonymous with bright hues, vibrant patterns and eclectic textures.
Curating spectacular lifestyle collections – including furniture, soft furnishings and homewares – to supply top Australian retailers and designers is just the everyday for Sarah Quin (founder and designer), and Jaipur-based Jemma Bell (the latest addition to the Canvas+Sasson family).
We caught up with them to hear about their recent adventures, and see what’s on the horizon in 2017 and beyond …
Canvas+Sasson’s look is very much a stunning fusion of classic and bohemian. What inspires you?
C+S always tend to look at fashion trends – anything from Tory Burch and Chanel to more high street style brands … We love seeing bold and bright prints in fashion and tailoring or paring back those looks for homewares. Travel is another huge inspiration. Sarah and Jemma (who lives in Jaipur, India) travel a lot and are constantly picking up ideas from different cultures.
The inspiration for the upcoming ranges was quite eclectic. Think Jaipur meets Cuba meets Palm Springs … with a dash of 70s!
Sarah and Jemma are currently in love with tiled and textured beach houses or clubs, such as the Playa Grande Beach Club in Dominican Republic; and Slim Aarons photography from the 70s. The powder hues and geometric patterns paired with classic stripes are just perfection!
Many of your textile and furniture collections are inspired by travels around the globe. Can you tell us more about your recent trip to Jaipur, India?
Sarah and Jemma’s time in Jaipur (and Delhi) together was jam packed … but with a bit of Indian fun mixed in and a few G&Ts! Jemma, who has been living in Jaipur for the last 3 years, made sure all the meetings are set and ready to go, before Sarah flew in from Australia.
On the last trip, the pair travelled around in a classic, vintage Ambassador … complete with moustached driver, who was super sweet! The Ambassador car was classic vintage cream with rounded curves, straight from the 70s.
Every meeting started with Masala Chai and a chat about the latest family developments from makers and craftspeople. Jemma, who visits the makers regularly, knows the ins and outs about who has recently had a son in the family, whose daughter aced their science test and what is the latest with the next wedding, so Sarah is always updated before getting down to the creative and business end.
And of course, each day ends with G&Ts by the pool and a chat about the gorgeous new print seen that day, and what colours will work for C+S!
What does a typical day look like for you both?
As the pair live in pretty different countries and cultures, their days vary!
By the time Jemma is up and in the office in Jaipur, Sarah has already emailed through new developments, issues (from time to time, they do happen) and inspiration. And by the time Sarah is getting into bed that evening, Jemma might be at the factories checking on a new product sample where she needs Sarah’s feedback or sign-off. Whatsapp allows the pair to get things done at all hours!
What trends are you seeing at the moment? And what are your trend predictions for 2018?
Sarah is seeing a move from Blush tones to Apricots and Corals for 2018; along with the continuation of florals and tropical inspired prints. Apple or Kelly Green will probably also be big, as we are seeing it in fashion trends now and details such as handwork on textiles – embroidery, appliqué and beading.
Which products/collections are you particularly excited about exhibiting at Reed Gift Fairs in Melbourne this August?
C+S have some amazing collections that will be launched at Reed Gift Fairs this year … We’re super excited about a new line of Ratan Furniture – think summery day beds and beach-inspired bar carts; a new direction in cushions with plenty of hand embellishments – cream beading, tapestry style embroidery and crocheted trims; and a new towelling range – hand block printed and perfectly tasseled!
What’s next for Canvas+Sasson?
Between travels to India, Brazil, Sri Lanka and China, it will be all about creating!
Pushing our creative boundaries to bring eclectic and exciting furniture and textiles to our customers that continue being true to the fusion of wanderlust, craftsmanship and bohemian vibes that C+S offer!
