This week, Reed Gift Fairs had the invaluable opportunity of interviewing one of our 2016 GALA Finalists, Habitat 101. We found out how the business begun, what GALA means for the brand, and what we can expect to see from them in 2016.
How and why did the brand begin? Tell us about Habitat 101:
Being in the photo frame and album business for over 30 years, we decided to further develop a homewares brand with Habitat101. With the experience of running a business already under our belt, we were excited to bring a whole new style of homewares to the Australian and New Zealand markets. We have our own design studio where everything is designed from scratch with current home and colour trends in mind and we work closely with our production facilities to ensure that we bring quality and ethical sourcing to our customers.
Why did you enter into our GALA award program? What does GALA mean for you and your business?
Entering the GALA award program is a great way to be recognized by the industry and receive brand and product exposure with retailers and consumers. Being nominated has already opened up new opportunities so we can’t wait to see the response if we win!
Any new and exciting products coming for 2016? Can we catch a glimpse on what you’re working on?
We have lots of new ranges coming out for Winter 2016 launching in February actually. We have new tableware ranges, glassware, cushions, clocks, felt storage, original artwork and lots more. Our products are all designed from scratch so you won’t be able to find them anywhere else!
Will we see you at Reed Gift Fairs this year? When and where can we expect this?
You sure will! We will be in Sydney this coming February and back in Melbourne in August.
Why do you exhibit at Reed Gift Fairs?
Our UR1 International photo frame and album brand has a long association with Reed Gift Fairs. In fact we launched our company at the Melbourne Gift Fair back in 1983 – with a 1.5 x 3 meter booth!!
What pieces from your collections are most popular with your customers?
One of our most popular ranges is our Olsen tableware, which is what we have been nominated for. Additionally, our ranges of colourful canisters, marble serving ware and tableware are also bestsellers. The great thing about our brand and what we pride ourselves on, is that we ‘tell stories’ right across home decor – from wall décor, to tableware, tea towels, serving boards, glassware, wire ware, felt storage and so on.
Excluding your website, how important is the power of social media within your business?
For those who are not really tech savvy, or a natural when it comes to marketing their product/ business, what advice would you give to assist them in overcoming this?
Social media is one of the most important marketing tools we have. It allows us to share and engage with not just the retailers we wholesale to, but also to the actual end consumer buying the products from stores. It’s a great way to share different uses for products, show inspirational styled shots and get feedback on the ranges. The best thing to do is just start – open up an account, take photos of your products and let the ball start rolling. You can repost photos as well, just make sure to give credit to where the image actually came from by tagging them in the post!
It takes some time to pick up speed, engage your audience, figure out what images work, what time of day is best and which hashtags get the best response, but you’ll soon become addicted!
