The gift fair that was…

It sure was a thrill seeing all the upcoming trends and new products that will be hitting the stores over the next few months! Over the next few weeks, we will take a closer look at some of the biggest furniture trends noted at Reed Gift Fairs Melbourne August.

We start this week with the rise of earthy rattan and wicker furniture. Here are just a few wicker and rattan finds we spotted at the recent fair in Melbourne. Be sure to keep your eye out for some lovely bamboo pieces that are starting to pop up too.

Home & Giftware - rattan

Seen featured on dining chairs, occasional chairs, lamps, pendants and decorative pieces, such as table bowls, both rattan and wicker have been around forever, but are both enjoying a resurgence in modern furniture design.

Suited to both outdoor and indoor furniture, rattan lends a relaxed, earthy feel to a home. Wicker is well-suited to covered outdoor use, but remember, it does need protection from the rain.

Amalfi - rattan

In terms of wearability, rattan is stronger than wicker. In fact, rattan is one of the strongest known woods, with the ability to grow as high as a hundred feet. While natural rattan typically cannot withstand the harsh Australian climate, it can work successfully outdoors if it has a protective coating – there is also the option of choosing a synthetic rattan furniture, which looks just like the real deal, but can cope with our Aussie weather. The same applies for synthetic wicker.

In their original natural colour, both materials work beautifully in eclectic, coastal or traditional Hamptons-style homes. Once coloured however, their appeal widens to include more contemporary styled homes. Black rattan in particular lends itself well to provide texture to a monochrome scheme.

Satara - rattan

You will no doubt come across more gorgeous pieces if you are heading to Reed Gift Fairs Sydney September, running from Saturday 17 – Tuesday 20 September, 2016.
